“God Loves Us When We Dance” is a queer, contemplative sci-fi drama following a group of students given a difficult task by a mysterious organization. We shot the film over 8 days in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in August 2024. Emma drew a lot of inspiration from 60s and 70s sci-fi, such as Tarkovsky’s Solaris, as well as modern sci-fi like Interstellar. For this we tried to stick to choreographed camera work and blocking for most sequences, but strategically broke that mode in favor of an improvisational, handheld look. The film is sci-fi, but it exists in our own world, and as such we wanted the cinematography to feel grounded for the majority of the film. As such, we worked with the location to augment and shape the natural light. We shot on my Sony Venice, which we paired with the Atlas Mercury Full-Frame Anamorphics, which I have grown very fond of. “God Loves Us When We Dance” is eyeing an early-2025 release.
