“An Arm, a Foot, and a Leg” is an NYU thesis film written and directed by Sammy LeMieur. We shot the film in March of 2024 in Little Falls, Minnesota, and it was the first NYU production ever shot in the state of Minnesota. The film draws inspiration from film noir and the black-and-white cinema of the late 50s and early 60s, as well as the work of the Coen Brothers, particularly 2011’s Inside Llewyn Davis. Sammy has very old-fashioned sensibilities and a matter-of-fact editing style, and such we wanted the film to maintain a very specific look, but not do anything too flashy with the cinematography outside of that look. Sammy was very particular about the deep focus look, for which we shot at an T5.6 or tighter, typically on wider lenses to give that look. We also focus on simple, yet effective blocking within the frame, as opposed to dramatic camera movements. We shot on the Arri Alexa Mini which we paired with Zeiss Standard Speeds. The film is currently in post-production and is eyeing a late-2024 release.
